Jesus has come into the world to be witness to the Truth. He reveals to those who will listen to his words the truth that is life. In the flesh, Jesus speaks. In the wake of his sacrificial death and glorious resurrection, the Word is written, as the Church speaks to bear witness to Him. He is proclaimed, Servant, Holy and Righteous. He is both Fulfillment of every prophecy, and Advocate for all who will turn to him in faith.
Jesus comes to the Disciples who are talking, discussing, questioning, even startled and terrified. He comes to reassure them that all that he had told them prior to his passion and death remains true. He comes to them to reveal, as is possible only now, how his death and resurrection fulfill every expectation and anticipation in the Scriptures: the Law, the Prophets, the Psalms ... the mystery of the Third Day wasn’t a fluke. The Scriptures up to the time of Jesus lead us to him. The Scriptures to be written by the Church in the Light of Jesus and in the Power of the Holy Spirit are equally divinely inspired and intended. They are equally rooted in the love, the mercy, and the power-of-life that is in God ... that is God.
Jesus comes to us even now that this truth, the Word of God may be lived in us. We are called to be witnesses of these things that constitute the Easter or Pascal Mystery. We are called not just to be witnesses just in the sense of being able to testify to what has happened then, but now. Not just to what has happened somewhere, but here. Not just to what has happened to or in someone else, but in us.
Jesus addresses in us what he addressed in Peter, and what Peter addressed in those we see and hear in Acts: weakness, fear, ignorance, denial, and choosing the path of least resistance. The Word lived and lives, was written, and now takes flesh again, in us!
