The readings from Sacred Scripture this weekend call us wonderfully to the unique ways in which the existence and the coming of the Kingdom of God will be proclaimed this week. On Monday we will celebrate the Feast of All Saints, and on Tuesday the Feast of All Souls.
This weekend we are invited to hear again and to consider more deeply why and for whom we exist. Advertisers bang their heads against the wall as a full-time job, thinking up ways to convince us that we exist to benefit from their product. Their effort is, of course, to their benefit if they can develop in us a desire and a loyalty along those lines.
Scripture has the ability to whisper or to shout loudly the truth we need to hear, the truth for which we exist, and the truth which will free us for the fulfillment our existence not just in this life but in the fullness of life to come.
“You are not far ...” Jesus’ words in Mark 12:34, today’s Gospel proclamation, declare the Kingdom of God IS 5 the Kingdom of God is not some mythical shadow land in a remote forest or atop a mountain but a reality within our experience and within our reach, CLOSE enough to... and yet a destination promised to us where our awareness of God will be transformed to be breathtakingly real, transformed as God’s AWARENESS of us!
This week we will join the Universal Church in celebrating and proclaiming our communion with All the Saints who experience that fulfillment for which we long. We will remember and commend to God all those whom we long to see again since that time when they left our earthly embrace.
Our Desire and God’s Loyalty... !
