Dear Friends in Christ,
This weekend, the Church celebrates Trinity Sunday. The Trinity is one God in three Divine Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. As we celebrate Trinity Sunday, we reflect upon the mystery of God and how this mystery is related to our lives of faith.
The Trinity was revealed to us in the Old and New Testaments. In the Gospels, Jesus spoke of Himself as God and of being in intimate relationship with both the Father and the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, which we celebrated last weekend, God sent out the Holy Spirit upon the Church so that it would be filled with divine life and power and able to fulfill its great mission.
Yet, what is The Holy Trinity? The best way to describe it is Divine Relationship. The Father, the Son and The Holy Spirit exist in perfect union with one another. Each Person of the Trinity is distinct, yet God is one. If God Himself is relationship, what does that mean for us?
The Church teaches us that, in Baptism, the Trinity comes to dwell within us. Through this Sacrament, we literally become living temples of God. If we are created in God’s image and likeness, then we are created in the Trinity’s image. Thus, we are created in the image of Divine Relationship.
If this is true, then, by our very nature, we are called to image Divine Relationship in all that we do. How do we see our relationships with God and one another? Can we see the image of God in each other? Do our relationships with God and one another bear the image of the Trinity in their love and giving of self?
As we celebrate Trinity Sunday, let us praise our God, the Father, the Son and The Holy Spirit. In Christ,
Fr. Michael
